Head Gasket Replacement Service

What Is a Head Gasket?

The head gasket on your vehicle may be small, but it’s very important to the safe and proper operation of your car, truck, or SUV. Sitting between the cylinder head and the engine block, the head gasket is there to make sure you are getting optimal compression and to prevent engine oil or coolant from leaking into your cylinders. As a component of the combustion chamber, it must be very strong and resilient in order to stand up to the massive pressures and forces that it is designed to keep in check. During combustion, the ignited fuel and air can produce pressures of over 2000 pounds per square inch. Pressed firmly between the cylinder head and the engine block, your head gasket is working hard to perform a simple, but critical job.

Head Gasket Types

There are three types of head gaskets. They are:

  • Multi-Layer Steel: A relatively new form of head gasket made from multiple layers of interwoven steel and elastomer.
  • Solid copper: A single, solid piece of copper which requires special machining work to be fitted.
  • Composite: Made from graphite and asbestos, this is an older design that is more prone to blowouts.
  • Elastomeric: Made with a steel core and silicone beads sealed by rolled steel, this gasket type was used heavily on Ford F1 engines.

Signs You May Have a Blown Head Gasket

Once your head gasket has been compromised, you are likely to start noticing the signs right away. Recognizing those signs early is important to avoid doing lasting damage to your vehicle.

  • Coolant Leaks: If you notice coolant leaking onto the ground or dripping under the hood, it may be coming through a hole that has been blown through your head gasket.
  • Depleted Coolant: While you may not see leaked coolant, a blown head gasket might still be causing it to deplete faster than normal.
  • Overheating: With your coolant spilling all over the road, your vehicle will overheat faster.
  • White Smoke in Exhaust: Coolant makes white smoke when it burns, and white smoke can be a sign coolant is leaking into your exhaust system.
  • Lower Compression: That tight seal is important to maintaining maximum power to the drive train. A blown head gasket will let some of your power escape.
  • Bubbles in the Radiator: Bubbles in the radiator are another good sign that the seal may have been broken.
