Our Dealership Is Here for You
We've been your neighbor since 1963, which means we've been here for over sixty years. Even during devastating times like the GM Bankruptcy, we survived, and thanks to our founder, "Rocketman" Norman Chesrown, and three generations of family ownership, we give you the family experience. You can "deal with the owner", which means you'll get to meet and chat with one of our owners, Jim, Ryan, or Joey, who are on-site and involved in our daily operations, when you look for a vehicle.
We're not a conglomerate, a corporate group, or an out-of-town investment. We're local, we've lived here for decades, and we think of you all as our friends, family, and neighbors. Our History
We are a family-owned and operated dealer that cares about your needs. Over our 60+ years in the game, we've had three generations of family ownership, and we're proud of the foundations that Norman Chesrown built for us starting way back in the 1960's. He made his employees feel like family, and his customers feel at home. We strive to live by his inspiration and create the idea environment to get your automotive needs taken care of.
Norman Chesrown and the Rocketman Era
Norman Chesrown was a Buick salesman with a reputation for treating people right. In the early 1960s, he was given the opportunity to purchase an Oldsmobile dealership in Delaware, Ohio. He took it. Chesrown Oldsmobile officially opened its doors in 1963.
From 1963 through the 1980s, Chesrown Oldsmobile became one of the top 10 Oldsmobile dealers in the country and held that ranking for 15 years. Norman, known around town as "Rocketman" after the Oldsmobile rocket symbol, built the business on a simple idea: customers are neighbors, not transactions. His employees became family. His reputation became the dealership's foundation.
Three Generations and Growing
Norman's three stepsons—Jim Gill, Dave Gill, and Tom Gill—all grew up around the dealership. The car business was in their blood. Over time, Dave left to open Dave Gill Chevrolet, and Tom left to open Tom Gill Chevrolet. Jim stayed at Chesrown alongside Norman.
Today, Chesrown Chevrolet is led by the third generation of family ownership. Jim Gill serves as President. His sons Ryan and Joey Gill lead day-to-day operations across the business.
In 2024, Chesrown Automotive expanded beyond Delaware for the first time, acquiring three Germain Motor Company dealerships in Sidney, Ohio. Ryan and Joey oversee the Sidney locations, which include Chevrolet-GMC, Ford, and Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram rooftops spanning nearly 20 acres.
Though this growth is new, our approach has not changed since Norman opened the doors in 1963: deal with the owner, take care of the customer, and earn their business every time.
Surviving the 2009 GM Bankruptcy
In 2009, GM declared bankruptcy—the largest industrial bankruptcy in American history. Dealers across the country closed their doors. Pontiac was eliminated. For family-owned operations like Chesrown, survival was not guaranteed.
Jim and his son Ryan Gill, who had officially joined the team in 2003 after spending summers working alongside his dad, pushed through it together. Customer loyalty, a strong team, and disciplined management kept Chesrown standing when many others did not.
We Love Our Community
Our community is the reason we are who we are, and we love to give back where and when we can! We believe it's a privilege to care for the community that gives us so much. That's why we regularly support local schools such as the Delaware Hayes High School, the Olentangy Schools, and the Worthington Christian School.
We are also a proud sponsor of the Delaware County Foundation, A Kid Again, the historic Strand Theater, the Delaware County Fair, and more. We know we wouldn't be where we are today without the members of our community, and we are thankful for them.
Over the last few years, we've had the fantastic opportunity to give our community back over $1 million. We are proud of this fact, but we are not done; we intend to continue this trend, so that our community knows we care by not just our words but by how we act.
Schools: Delaware Hayes, Olentangy Schools, Worthington Christian
We genuinely enjoy the partnerships we have with these schools. To have robust, educated youth, creating a strong and healthy environment for the next generation is essential. By giving to these schools, we feel it benefits students, families, and staff.
Delaware County Foundation
Delaware County Foundation is a non-profit that people can contribute to. It benefits the community of Delaware County by gifting grants, scholarships, and other local initiatives free of charge to Delaware County residents.
A Kid Again
A Kid Again puts on fun-filled events for children suffering life-threatening conditions. Its mission is to bring children and their families hope, happiness, and healing. We are deeply grateful for our long-term involvement with such an impactful organization.
Delaware County Fair
Ever since Chesrown started doing business in Delaware County, we have been a proud sponsor of the Delaware County Fair and the Little Brown Jug. The fair touches so many Delaware County residents. Everyone enjoys it and benefits from it, including 4-H club members and horse race fans. We are proud to sponsor 4-H prizes, Little Brown Jug, and other sectors.
The Strand Theatre
The Strand Theatre is a 100-year-old historic landmark in downtown Delaware and one of the country's oldest operating movie theaters. Partnering with Strand has been a great chance to keep Delaware's history growing. We supported Strand's refurbishment, and we feel honored by their naming of the Chesrown concession stand.
