It isn’t uncommon knowledge that engine oil and the oil filter have to be changed regularly, most drivers understand this fact even if they don’t understand why. Oil lubricates the pistons as they move inside the cylinders, and there are two reasons for such lubrication. First, they are metal parts moving against each other, the lubrication prevents grinding against each other and wearing away at the metal causing a need for regular replacement. Second, the lubricating oil reduces friction between the moving parts and helps cool any heat produced by the same friction.
A conventional oil change is recommended every 3,000 miles and includes a new oil filter. During a regular oil change the gasket on the retaining bolt used for draining the oil from beneath the oil pan should be replaced, and some models recommend the bolt itself be replaced due to the nature of modern alloys used for such parts. A traditional oil change for a diesel engine is no different, other than the oil weight will vary. The proper oil as recommended in the owner’s manual should always be used to assure continued optimal performance. Regular oil changes at the recommended times is the single most important maintenance procedure toward getting the most usable life from a vehicle, which explains the importance of having the oil changed, and changed properly by an authorized technician.
Semi-synthetic and fully synthetic oil changes are no different from conventional oil changes in terms of the procedure, and any car can be switched to such modern oils if the owner so desires. Synthetics are designed to last longer than conventional oil, which makes them ideal for newer cars which are expected to run for many more miles than any previous generation of vehicles were capable of. The key things to remember are that the oil exchange is just as important at the proper intervals, and the oil filter needs to be appropriately designed to last as long as the oil itself.
