Your drive belt, which is also called a serpentine belt, is an integral component of your vehicle. It is a long flat belt with many ribs on it and it is driven by the crankshaft pulley. The belt powers all of your engine accessories, so if it is malfunctioning or broken, your vehicle won’t move at all. Your serpentine belt is a long-lasting product and it will generally be recommended to replace it at 90,000 miles. Your belt should be inspected for wear and tear any time you have service performed on your vehicle. Most oil changes and annual inspections will include this service.
If your belt is wearing out, you may notice a squealing noise when the belt is stretched out and slipping. On visual inspection, you may notice some of the belt missing rubber, a lot of cracking or a shredded look on the edge of the belt. Your battery light may come on; telling you that the alternator is not working with the belt properly or your engine may overheat very quickly if the belt is not tensioned correctly by a tensioner that keeps it tight.
A mechanic will run your engine to do an inspection on your tensioner and on the rotating components to make certain they are operating properly and will work with the new belt. The belt tensioner is released and then the old belt is pulled off. All the rotating components including the alternator, air conditioner compressor, power steering pump, water pump, and air pump are examined for wear. If these items all check out, a new belt is installed.
