Brake technology has seen some significant advancements in recent years, making brakes last much longer and work much better. Brake pads are mounted on the end of the master cylinder and press against the brake disc to bring your wheels to a stop. The brake pad is extremely durable and prevents the cylinder from grinding into the disc.
In time, however, brake pads do wear thin and eventually allow the cylinder to bite into the disc. When this happens, you’ll hear the unmistakable sound of metal grinding on metal. When this happens, you will need to have your discs replaced or resurfaced- otherwise, the worn discs will destroy a new set of pads very quickly. Also, even if you replace your brake pads on time, your discs will eventually become worn and need to be replaced.
You can go a while with worn pads if the noise doesn’t bother you. But that sound means your discs are being destroyed and will need to be replaced or replaced. Your braking system is arguably the most important part of your car or truck. If you are riding on worn brake pads, you are severely degrading your brakes and taking a big risk with your safety and that of other drivers around you.
A car that won’t start is a problem. But a car that won’t stop is unacceptable. Running on thin brake pads and damaging discs is dangerous, and if you do not have your discs resurfaced or replaced, your brakes will fail eventually.
